I ate my first Calzone during my visit to NY and it left an impression. The gooey cheesiness, fresh out the oven dough flavored with herbs and side of marinara sauce - all took me to heaven. If you’re in the NY area, I recommend trying Tonino’s Pizza in Westhampton Beach, NY. It felt like Tonino’s is run by a team of Italians who were putting their souls into making staple italian-american dishes. This experience got me thinking what exactly is a calzone, and what are the different variations of calzones?

A calzone is an italian oven-baked folded pizza that originated in Naples in the 18th century, according to Wikipedia. They’re typically made from salted bread dough and can be stuffed with salami, ham, egg, vegetables, as well as cheese such as mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan or pecorino.

I have to share this calzone recipe I found that involves frying calzones and shows they don’t always have to be baked. Read more on Saveur.com.

With so many combinations of ingredients to try, I like whipping up my own calzones at home because it’s simple! Cooking is easier if you just buy ready-made pizza dough. I get mine at my local Italian grocery store and then it’s just a matter of choosing the stuffing. Ham, egg and mozzarella (+ whatever Italian cheeses you like) is great for breakfast, or salami, kalamata olives and mozzarella makes for a weekend meal.

I encourage you to dish up a calzone and take pleasure ASAP because you deserve it! Kali Orexi.
